“Doing the Work: Fulfilling the Great Commission!” Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Scripture Context: At this juncture Jesus has just completed a three-year ministry where he traveled preaching teaching and performing miracles, all the while preparing His disciples to carry His Gospel. After the harrowing crucifixion and the triumphant resurrection, Jesus commissions his disciples to do what He had taught them to do with the promise that He would be present to guide them.

The Mission of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, “Changing Lives through the Power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ”, is perfectly in line with Jesus' “Great Commission.” In the Great Commission, Jesus charges the disciples to make new disciples through teaching and ministry praxis. In 2024 we will strive to fulfill the Great Commission by “Doing the Work!”

What is the work? We will do Spiritual Work, Organizational Work, and Operational Work.

Spiritual Work

Through preaching and teaching on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, we will examine what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today. Are we simply members of an organization (the church) or disciples of Christ? We must understand our role as 21st-century disciples of Christ if we are to continue the work of making new disciples for Christ.

Organizational Work

In the text, it is clear that a part of making disciples is to involve people in ministry praxis (“teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you.”) Our ministries must have clear goals which are in alignment with the Bible and the church’s mission. In 2024 we are asking each ministry to set goals for the year. Examples of such a goal might be gaining new ministry members, tackling an ambitious project, or updating an essential policy or practice. The goal should be one that would empower the ministry to achieve the church mission: “changing lives through the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

After identifying a goal, each ministry will determine the strategies they will use to pursue and obtain their goal. We will schedule a meeting of the ministries at the end of February where each ministry will share their goals and strategy. This may become an annual process to continually refine the work of the ministries at Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

Operational Work

The church must have a solid infrastructure and a clear network of communication to maintain membership and anticipate growth. In 2024 we must continue to do the work of repairing (and in some cases installing) essential church operations to include: completion of policies and procedures; finalizing the latest edition of the constitution; presentation of clear and regular financial reporting; creation of a church-wide organizational chart; preparations to return to an annual budget process; develop plan to rebuild reserves; revitalize Pathways 501c3; and more.

Please remain prayerful as we “Do the Work: Fulfilling the Great Commission.”
